Governor Umo Eno’s ambitious pledge to revitalize Akwa Ibom State’s maritime sector has reached a significant milestone with the near completion of a 64-seat passenger and cargo ferry.
Currently under construction at the Nigerian Navy Shipyard in Port Harcourt, the vessel represents a cornerstone of the administration’s “Arise Agenda,” designed to reconnect coastal communities and stimulate the local blue economy.
The project recently underwent a rigorous technical and administrative oversight visit to ensure the vessel’s operational readiness.
This inspection was part of a coordinated effort to align the construction progress with Governor Eno’s timeline for reinstating reliable marine transportation.
Officials noted that the ferry is a strategic response to the growing need for safe and efficient travel along the state’s vast waterways.
During the facility tour, the Superintendent of the Naval Shipyard, Rear Admiral Ikenna Ubani, confirmed that all major mechanical and structural installations are already in place.

He revealed that necessary funding has been secured to fast-track the remaining work, which consists largely of minor finishing touches. Admiral Ubani expressed high confidence that the ferry would be ready for its initial test runs as early as June.
Once finalized, the vessel will undergo a series of comprehensive safety checks before sailing to its permanent station in Akwa Ibom. It is slated to operate primarily from the Oron Marine Terminal, serving as a vital link for both commuters and traders.
Experts believe this investment will not only ease the burden on road infrastructure but also provide a significant boost to regional tourism and coastal commerce.
In a further display of the state’s commitment to maritime expansion, a second ferry is simultaneously being constructed by Hydro Marine Boat Services Limited in Lagos.
This dual-vessel strategy aims to create a robust transport ecosystem, ensuring that the Oron terminal becomes a bustling hub for maritime activity.
Both vessels are expected to be commissioned soon, marking a new era for Akwa Ibom’s water-based economy.
