Nigeria’s Falconets have officially punched their ticket to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, overcoming a spirited challenge from Malawi’s Scorchers.

Despite falling 2-1 in a tense second-leg, final-round qualifier on Saturday, the Nigerian side progressed with a 3-2 aggregate victory. The result ensures Nigeria maintains its proud record of excellence in youth women’s football on the continental stage.

The Moses Aduku-led squad entered the fray with a comfortable cushion, having secured a 2-0 win in the first leg in Ikenne, Ogun State, just a week prior.

However, that advantage was swiftly erased as Malawi’s Faith Chimzimu turned the tide with a clinical brace. Chimzimu found the back of the net in the 9th and 56th minutes, leveling the aggregate score and putting the Falconets’ qualification hopes in serious jeopardy.

With the pressure mounting and the aggregate score deadlocked, the Falconets responded with the composure of champions.

In the 62nd minute, Precious delivered the decisive blow, pulling a crucial goal back for Nigeria. That single strike proved to be the difference-maker, restoring Nigeria’s aggregate lead and deflating the home side’s momentum just as a total comeback seemed within Malawi’s reach.

This hard-fought qualification marks Nigeria’s 12th appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, continuing an unbroken streak of participation since the tournament’s maiden edition in Canada in 2002.

As one of the most consistent teams in the history of the competition, the Falconets will now shift their focus toward preparing for the global stage in Poland later this year.
