The Peoples Democratic Party faction led by Kabiru Turaki has named former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Jonathan’s candidature was approved on Saturday during a special national convention held at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki District, Abuja.
Although the former president was not present at the venue, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa State.
The faction said the process was in line with its internal arrangements ahead of the 2027 polls.
The convention venue was changed after the Turaki-led faction initially planned to hold the event at A-Class Park and Event Centre.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration later directed owners of hotels and event centres to only deal with the leadership of political parties recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
INEC currently recognizes the PDP faction backed by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, as the authentic leadership of the party.
The development highlights the ongoing leadership tussle within the PDP as different groups push competing structures ahead of the 2027 general election.
