Golfers from across the African continent have converged for the highly anticipated 2026 Ibom Open, which officially tees off on Thursday, at the Ibom Golf Resort.
The prestigious four-day tournament features top-tier swingers from Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Cameroon, promising a weekend of intense competition and exceptional sportsmanship.
Confirming the development in an exclusive chat with XL News, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Usenobong Akpabio, highlighted the broader impact of the championship beyond the greens.
According to Akpabio, the tournament is strategically positioned to significantly boost Akwa Ibom State’s tourism industry and stimulate the local economy by attracting international visitors, sports enthusiasts, and investors.
Speaking on the pedigree of the championship, Senator Emmanuel Anosike—the former Captain of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Golf Club and current Chairman of the Anambra/Imo River Development Authority—described the Ibom Open as a uniquely remarkable experience.
He emphasized that the tournament’s high standards continue to elevate the status of golfing in the region, drawing seasoned players to one of West Africa’s premier courses.
Echoing this enthusiasm, the Captain of the host club, Isua Archibong, expressed the Ibom Golf Club’s absolute readiness to deliver a flawless event.
Archibong assured participants and spectators alike that the course and facilities are in peak condition, setting the stage for a world-class golfing spectacle.
According to the official line-up of activities, today, Thursday, is strictly designated for the arrival and registration of players.
The competitive action is scheduled to begin in earnest on Friday with the qualifiers, stretching into Saturday, before culminating in the grand finale, championship matches, and the presentation of trophies on Sunday.
