The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation into allegations of criminal defamation, cyberstalking, and other related offenses.
This development follows a formal petition submitted directly to the State Commissioner of Police, prompting swift regulatory action from law enforcement.
According to an official statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, the petition was filed on June 17, 2026.
The legal action was initiated on behalf of Senator Effiong Bob by his legal counsel, Samuel Ikpo and Company Chambers, who sought police intervention regarding the matter.
The petition explicitly names one Ewa Okpo, accusing him of using his various social media platforms to publish and circulate damaging content.
The complainant alleges that Okpo distributed videos and other digital materials containing statements that are false, malicious, defamatory, and calculated to injure the hard-earned reputation and integrity of the Senator.
Upon receiving the formal complaint, the state command immediately activated its investigative machinery in line with its constitutional and statutory responsibilities.
Consequently, the suspect was tracked down, arrested, and taken into lawful custody, where he is currently assisting the police with their ongoing inquiries.
In light of the incident, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing that social media is not a sanctuary for criminality.
The police reiterated that while the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of expression, that right does not confer a license to fabricate falsehoods, malign the character of others, or spread malicious content.
