A US judge ruled Tuesday that 23-year-old Tyler James Robinson, the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, will face trial for murder after prosecutors established sufficient evidence.
Robinson faces the death penalty in Utah for the September 10 shooting last year, which claimed the life of the 31-year-old right-wing leader.
“For the foregoing reasons and based off the record and parties’ submissions, it is hereby ordered that the defendant, Tyler James Robinson, is bound over for trial,” Judge Tony Graf announced in court.
Following the decision, Robinson officially pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The ruling came at the conclusion of a preliminary hearing where both sides fiercely debated the trajectory of the case.
Prosecutors presented video gamer chats, text messages, and DNA evidence to argue that Robinson targeted Kirk because he was “fed up” with the influencer’s rhetoric, while the defense primarily challenged the validity of the genetic evidence linking him to the weapon.
Kirk was killed while speaking at a college campus event organized by Turning Point, the right-wing youth organization that campaigned for President Donald Trump in 2024.
Erika Kirk, who has since taken over leadership of the group as his widow, released a statement on X noting that the decision “marks an important step in our family’s pursuit of justice for him”.
The high-profile assassination sent deep shockwaves through the American political landscape nearly a year ago.
Kirk had risen to prominence as a leading voice in a Christian Nationalist movement that championed traditional values while fiercely opposing diversity initiatives and LGBTQ communities.
