Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi has been elected as the new President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), securing a decisive victory at the elective congress held on Thursday in Abuja.

He takes over the leadership of the federation from the outgoing president, Musa Kida, ushering in a new chapter for the sport in the country.

Abdullahi emerged victorious after polling 48 votes to defeat his closest challenger, former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji, who managed eight votes.

Another prominent contender, former international Ejike Ugboaja, failed to secure a vote in the heavily contested presidential race.

In a related electoral development, Ugo Udezue emerged as the NBBF Vice President unopposed, having stood as the sole candidate for the position.

His emergence provides stability and a clear leadership pairing at the top of the federation’s executive board.

The transition comes at a critical juncture for Nigerian basketball.

The incoming board faces high expectations to address long-standing challenges surrounding domestic competitions, robust grassroots development programs, enhanced players’ welfare, improved funding, and the overall governance of the game.

Professionally, Abdullahi serves as the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria.

He assumes leadership at a time when national teams, particularly the women’s national team D’Tigress, have achieved notable international success, driving widespread calls for stronger domestic structures to support and sustain basketball development at home.
