The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully neutralized a significant security threat following the discovery of explosive materials at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre.
In a statement released in Uyo, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, revealed that the prompt intervention of security forces averted what could have been a catastrophic tragedy at the facility.
The operation was initiated after correctional authorities provided credible intelligence regarding suspicious items discovered within the vicinity of the center.
Upon receiving the report, Commissioner of Police Baba Azare immediately mobilized the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, BomPol Base 38, alongside various tactical teams to secure the perimeter.
A meticulous search and sweep operation led to the recovery of high-risk military-grade hardware, including two 90 mm high explosive rounds and a 45 cm length of burning fuse. Additionally, several tools—including iron chisels, a conduit pipe, pincers, and a screwdriver—were seized at the scene, suggesting a deliberate attempt to compromise the facility’s integrity.

The specialized EOD team successfully rendered the devices safe, preventing any loss of life or destruction of critical state infrastructure. To ensure continued safety, the command has significantly reinforced security around the custodial centre and its environs.
Enhanced surveillance, stricter access control, and continuous patrols have been implemented to deter further threats, while a discreet investigation and technical analysis are underway to trace the origin of the explosives and apprehend those responsible.
DSP John reassured the public that the situation is firmly under control and confirmed that no casualties were recorded during the operation. She urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station, emphasizing that the command will not tolerate any attempts to undermine public safety or target vital institutions.
The police spokesperson reaffirmed the command’s proactive stance and unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property throughout Akwa Ibom State.
