The Senior Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Governor on Brand Management and Marketing, Raphael Edem, has observed that outsiders often appreciate the state’s strengths and achievements far more than some of its own residents.
Speaking recently as a guest on XL 106.9FM’s Super Breakfast Show, the governor’s aide expressed concern that despite the numerous attractions and rapid development strides recorded across the state, certain residents continue to harbor and project negative perceptions about Akwa Ibom.
During the broadcast, Edem pointed out that promoting the image of Akwa Ibom is not as difficult a task as many people assume.
He stressed that effective branding should not be viewed as a duty left solely in the hands of the government. Instead, he advocated for a collective effort, emphasizing that when every citizen participates in telling the positive Akwa Ibom story, it significantly strengthens the state’s reputation on a larger scale.
The Governor’s aide further noted that while no society or place is entirely perfect, successful communities worldwide do not constantly amplify their shortcomings.
He explained that progressive societies acknowledge their challenges internally but make a conscious effort to promote their strengths, culture, and positive milestones to the wider world.
According to Edem, adopting this mindset is crucial for Akwa Ibom to attract sustainable investments and foster a deeper sense of homegrown pride.
Concluding his remarks, Edem called on all residents, both at home and in the diaspora, to embrace a more positive narrative about the state.
He reminded the public that how Akwa Ibom is perceived, both nationally and internationally, is a collective responsibility.
By shifting the focus toward the state’s vast potentials and developmental strides under Governor Umo Eno, Edem believes the state can better position itself as a premier destination for business and tourism.
