Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Defects from PDP to APM Ahead of 2027 Polls

In a seismic shift for Nigeria’s political landscape, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) on Saturday.

Flanked by APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, and loyalists from the Tanimu Turaki-led faction, the Governor announced his exit during a high-profile event at the Government House in Bauchi.

This move marks a significant blow to the PDP, as Mohammed previously served as the influential Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, a role that cemented his status as a heavyweight in the nation’s primary opposition party.

Describing the transition as both “firm and strategic”, Governor Mohammed revealed that the decision was the result of exhaustive consultations with political associates and key stakeholders.

He emphasized that the move was driven by the necessity to reposition his political base ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that the PDP no longer provides the cohesion required to meet his administration’s goals. “We cannot allow our people to run out without a credible and effective political platform”, Mohammed stated, noting that the APM offers the “energy and direction” needed to remain a viable force in the coming years.

The formal induction saw Chairman Dantalle present the Governor with an APM membership card and the party’s flag, which famously features a tuber of cassava.

Despite the departure, Mohammed struck a conciliatory tone regarding his former party, expressing gratitude to the PDP for providing the platform that facilitated his initial election in 2019. He acknowledged the historical role the party played in his career, even as he pivoted toward what he described as a “coherent and credible alternative” for the people of Bauchi and his supporters nationwide.

The defection followed an intense, closed-door stakeholders’ meeting where the final terms of the realignment were reportedly solidified.

By joining the APM, Mohammed is clearly signaling a calculated gamble intended to secure his political future and provide his followers with a structured vehicle for the 2027 cycle. As the dust settles on this major realignment, the focus now shifts to how the PDP will respond to the loss of one of its most prominent governors and what this means for the broader political map leading into the next election.
