The Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, has officially unveiled “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny” as the theme for the 2026 Carnival Calabar and Festival.

Speaking on Sunday night during a high-profile unveiling ceremony in Lagos, Governor Otu stated that the 21st-anniversary edition will introduce key innovations designed to deepen public participation, expand economic opportunities, and boost the carnival’s global appeal.

The event drew an influential crowd of tourism stakeholders, diplomats, cultural enthusiasts, and government officials to celebrate the launch of the milestone edition.

Governor Otu emphasized that the theme reflects a collective resolve to reimagine the future of the festival and harness its immense potential as a driver of economic growth, cultural preservation, and tourism development. “We are not just unveiling a theme; we are unveiling a vision,” Otu remarked, adding that the carnival has evolved into a premier platform for showcasing Cross River to the world while creating tangible opportunities for businesses, artisans, and youth.

He called for continuous innovation to ensure that the economic benefits of the festival are felt directly across local communities.

In a bid to modernize the festival, the Chairman of the Carnival Calabar Commission, Gabe Onah, announced the introduction of online voting for the 2026 edition, transitioning audiences from passive spectators to active participants.

Onah revealed that the carnival is being heavily repositioned to create jobs through the commercialization of its activities.

Organizers have engaged creative partners to develop carnival-inspired movies and digital platforms for real-time global streaming.

The festival’s international standing was highly praised by the Portuguese Ambassador to Nigeria, Paulo Santos, who compared Carnival Calabar favorably with iconic celebrations in Europe, the Americas, and Brazil.

Santos commended the event’s scale, professionalism, and diverse segments—including the children’s and bikers’ events—noting how effectively it strengthens global people-to-people ties.

Highlighting the carnival’s growing international footprint, Chief Edem Duke also announced that the CalasVegas Band has been selected to represent Nigeria at an upcoming carnival in India.

As preparations heat up, industry leaders are rallying to maximize the festival’s economic impact. Ikechi Uko, a prominent tourism promoter, urged travel agencies and operators to aggressively market Cross River as the ultimate destination for the upcoming “Detty December” season to double visitor arrivals.

Supporting this call, Aliyu Badaki, President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), pledged the full backing of tourism practitioners, praising the carnival as a sustainable economic model that continues to empower local costume makers, service providers, and businesses.
