The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have threatened to embark on nationwide industrial action if the growing insecurity across the country persists.

The labour centres expressed concern over the increasing cases of terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings, warning that the situation poses a serious threat to the safety and well-being of Nigerians.

The warning was issued during a joint media briefing held on the sidelines of the ongoing 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Labour leaders said the worsening security challenges have continued to affect workers, businesses, and communities, calling on the government to take urgent and decisive measures to restore peace and order.

According to the unions, the failure of authorities to effectively tackle insecurity has led to loss of lives, displacement of communities, and disruptions to economic activities.

They stressed that workers cannot continue to operate in an environment where their lives and livelihoods are constantly under threat.

The NLC and TUC also dismissed claims by some state governors that negotiations were ongoing with workers regarding a proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage.

The labour leaders maintained that such assertions do not accurately reflect the current state of discussions on workers’ welfare and wage adjustments.

They reiterated their commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian workers and urged governments at all levels to engage sincerely with labour representatives on issues affecting workers.

The unions warned that they would not hesitate to take appropriate action should insecurity continue unabated and workers’ concerns remain unaddressed.
