Former Southampton and Royal Antwerp forward, Victor Udoh, has tragically passed away at the age of 21 in Abuja, Nigeria, under what reports are describing as “suspicious circumstances.”
According to The Mirror UK, the young striker was found dead shortly after returning to Abuja, Nigeria. While authorities have yet to officially confirm the exact cause of death, the football world has been left in shock by the sudden loss of the rising talent.
Belgian club Royal Antwerp, where Udoh spent a significant portion of his early European career, confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement on Tuesday.
Udoh originally joined Antwerp from Abuja-based academy Hypebuzz, quickly making a name for himself by scoring 12 goals in 21 matches for the “Young Reds” reserve team before making 28 official appearances for the senior squad. “With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh,” the club stated. “Our thoughts are with Victor’s family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time.”
The promising young attacker had recently entered a transitional phase in his career, having just ended a spell with Czech Republic club Dynamo České Budějovice.
That move followed a brief stint in England with Southampton, who had signed him to a three-and-a-half-year deal in 2025.
Udoh spent roughly seven months on the South Coast before leaving by mutual consent in a bid to secure more regular first-team playing time, a testament to his ambition and highly-regarded potential in European football.
Tributes have begun pouring in from former teammates, including former Watford midfielder, Pierre Dwomoh, who expressed his disbelief on Instagram. “I woke up to it on Tuesday morning,” Dwomoh wrote, noting that conversations with Udoh’s relatives unfortunately confirmed the reality of the tragedy.
As the global football community mourns the devastating loss of a life cut short, local authorities in Nigeria have yet to release further details as investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death continue.
