The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to embark on an indefinite strike starting Monday, June 1, 2026.
The industrial action comes as a direct response to the continued abduction of teachers and pupils in the state, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
According to the union, the total downing of tools has become a necessary measure to compel urgent government intervention for the safe rescue of the victims.
In a joint statement signed by the Oyo State Wing Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the NUT expressed deep concern over the prolonged captivity of the abductees.
The union noted that the situation has heightened fear, anxiety, and instability within the state’s education sector. Furthermore, the incident has severely damaged public confidence in the school system, leaving parents increasingly reluctant to send their children to classrooms amid the rising insecurity.
The leadership emphasized that the strike aims to pressure relevant authorities and security agencies to intensify their efforts toward securing the immediate and unconditional release of the victims.
Consequently, the NUT has urged all teachers across Oyo State to strictly comply with the strike directive, remain law-abiding, and prioritize their personal safety by staying away from school premises for the duration of the action.
Closing the communique, the union expressed its profound solidarity with the traumatized families of the affected teachers and pupils.
The NUT assured them that it will not relent in engaging key stakeholders until all victims are safely reunited with their loved ones.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and protection of school communities, the union maintained that the educational system cannot function effectively under the current climate of fear.
