Afrobeats star, Stanley Didia popularly known as Omah Lay claims that a deep divide splits the Nigerian music industry, forcing artists and fans to choose between the camps of Davido and Wizkid.
In a recent interview, the “Soso” singer opened up about the internal politics of the Afrobeats scene and why he briefly distanced himself from the industry’s biggest names.
Omah Lay revealed that in 2024, he took the bold step of unfollowing Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido—collectively known as the Afrobeats “Big 3.” He explained that his decision stemmed from a disagreement with their leadership style and the industry’s existing structures.
“The whole Nigerian Afrobeats scene is very separated. It’s like if you’re with Davido, you’re on one side; if you’re with Wizkid, you’re on the other,” he stated.
The singer noted that while the “Big 3” started a movement that the industry needed, he felt they were stuck in an “old pattern” that no longer served the genre’s growth.
Despite the industry’s polarized nature, Omah Lay spoke warmly about his personal experience working with Davido. Reflecting on their collaboration for the track ‘With You’, he described the process as “natural.”
Omah Lay admitted that the experience made him “fall in love” with Davido’s character, offering a defense of the DMW boss against his critics.
“Nothing to Prove”
The singer addressed the constant scrutiny Davido faces, attributing much of the animosity to the superstar’s wealthy upbringing.
