The Nigeria Police Force has officially condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, which took place on April 26, 2026.

The incident occurred after operatives from the Effurun Area Command responded to reports at the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. Members of a local transport union had reportedly apprehended Ogidi after discovering a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition concealed within a parcel he was attempting to waybill.

Tragedy struck during the arrest when the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in what authorities have described as a “clear violation of extant regulations.” The discharge resulted in the immediate death of the suspect while he was being taken into custody.

In a swift response to the breach of protocol, the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has ordered the immediate transfer of ASP Usman and his entire team to Force Headquarters in Abuja to face the Force Disciplinary Committee.

The Inspector-General of Police has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing that the Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding extra-judicial actions and the abuse of authority.

He assured the public that the officers involved will undergo summary disciplinary measures and criminal prosecution to ensure that justice is served in strict accordance with the law.

As the legal and disciplinary processes begin, the police high command is urging citizens to remain calm and law-abiding.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, reaffirmed that any conduct undermining public trust will be met with decisive action, reiterating the department’s commitment to accountability and the protection of fundamental human rights.
