Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says President Bola Tinubu remains calm and focused despite recent threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump over the country’s security situation.
Speaking with journalists after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the minister said Tinubu is taking a measured approach to ensure the international community understands Nigeria’s ongoing security efforts.
According to Idris, President Tinubu is not rattled by Trump’s remarks but is instead focused on strengthening national security and unity.
He noted that the President has recently revamped the leadership of the armed forces as part of ongoing reforms to make the country safer for all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or religion.
The minister dismissed claims that the Nigerian government is targeting any particular faith, describing such allegations as false and dangerous narratives spread by extremists trying to divide the country.
He emphasized that the Tinubu administration is engaging religious leaders and the international community to douse tension and promote understanding.
“Nigeria is a multi-religious nation,” Idris said. “Our constitution guarantees everyone the freedom to practice their faith, and the President will continue to protect that right.”
Idris urged Nigerians to stay united, resist divisive rhetoric, and focus on nation-building, stressing that the current situation is a test of the country’s resilience.
His comments follow Trump’s recent post on Truth Social, where the former U.S. President threatened possible military action in Nigeria, alleging persecution of Christians — a claim that has triggered widespread condemnation and diplomatic concern.
