The United States has said it will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, warning that future security cooperation and financial support could depend on the country’s commitment to religious freedom and the credibility of the electoral process.

The remarks were made by US Congressman, Riley Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, during an interview with NoireTV.

Speaking on Nigeria’s next general elections, Moore stated that the conduct of the polls had become a key priority for Washington.

He said both he and the US administration would pay close attention to how the elections are conducted and whether they meet expected democratic standards.

According to him, the outcome and execution of the polls will influence future US engagement with Nigeria.

The lawmaker also disclosed that the US House of Representatives is considering an appropriations bill containing strong provisions relating to Nigeria.

Moore explained that the legislation includes measures addressing the persecution of Christians, restrictions on security assistance to the Nigerian government, and conditions that Nigeria must meet to maintain aspects of its relationship with the United States.

Moore noted that the appropriations bill, which he expects to become law, contains what he described as “strong and aggressive” language that would be binding on future US-Nigeria relations.

He added that the legislation complements a separate bill sponsored by Congressman Chris Smith, of which he is a co-sponsor, aimed at addressing concerns over religious freedom in Nigeria.

The congressman further revealed that he remains in close contact with the Trump administration on issues concerning Nigeria.

Moore said he planned to raise the matter again during a scheduled dinner with President Donald Trump, adding that the issue is of significant importance to the US President and that discussions on Nigeria’s next steps would continue.
