In a major escalation of the federal government’s anti-corruption drive, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN).
According to reports, the arrest, which took place in Abuja on Wednesday, follows allegations of money laundering involving a staggering sum of more than N500 billion.
This high-profile move comes on the heels of the recent conviction of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, signaling an intensifying scrutiny of the nation’s energy sector.
The arrest has thrust the Energy Commission of Nigeria into the national spotlight as investigators begin a deep dive into the agency’s financial records.
Highly placed sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that Abdullahi was picked up and taken into custody for intensive questioning.
Investigators are reportedly examining a complex web of financial transactions linked to the alleged fraud, with the Director-General expected to remain in detention at the EFCC headquarters as the probe widens.
As of Wednesday evening, the EFCC has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the specific charges or the progress of the interrogation.
Efforts to reach the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, proved unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, leaving the industry and the public awaiting further details on one of the largest financial investigations in recent years.
