Security agencies across Nigeria have elevated the nation’s security posture to a state of high alert following credible intelligence warning of coordinated attack plots by suspected terrorists and non-state actors.
The security threats specifically target vulnerable public locations, including schools, places of worship, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps, and recreation centers throughout the remainder of the year.
In response to the threat, the Department of Operations at Force Headquarters has distributed an urgent security directive to all zonal and state commands, as well as tactical units such as the Police Counter-Terrorism Units, Bomb Disposal Unit, and the Police Mobile Force.
Intelligence reports indicate an increased mobilization of terrorist elements, with specific movements of armed groups tracked from Katsina through Kaduna to Plateau State.
The timing of the security alert coincides with the approaching reopening of academic institutions for the 2026/2027 academic session.
Security officials noted that operatives belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and their local collaborators have been actively conducting surveillance and reconnaissance on potential targets, prompting immediate preventive measures across the country.
As part of the joint counter-terrorism strategy, police formations have been ordered to implement rigorous, intelligence-led surveillance, intensified patrols, stop-and-search operations, and strict access control around all identified high-risk zones.
Furthermore, State Commissioners of Police have been instructed to secure state borders, entry and exit points, and critical transit routes to curb the infiltration of hostile actors.
Military authorities have also acknowledged the intelligence report, confirming that armed forces are closely monitoring the situation.
Troops nationwide have been placed on heightened alert for potential interdiction deployments, while law enforcement agencies urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals, vehicles, or movements immediately.
