Residents of Akwa Ibom State have been urged to desist from stigmatising abortion when it is undertaken for medical purposes, particularly in situations where the procedure is required to protect the health or save the life of a woman.
The call comes amidst ongoing public conversations around healthcare accessibility and maternal well-being across the state.
Speaking as a guest on XL FM’s Super Breakfast Show, medical expert, Dr. Ekomobong Udoh, emphasized that medical terminations carried out under critical conditions should not be subjected to societal judgment or stigma.
He noted that such intervention decisions are made strictly to preserve life and maintain optimal health outcomes for women facing severe medical complications.
Dr. Udoh further cautioned members of the public against seeking services from quacks and unverified outlets.
He urged residents to consistently prioritise professional care by consulting qualified healthcare facilities, warning that patronising untrained practitioners poses grave risks that could lead to severe health consequences or loss of life.
Addressing the broader societal perception of the topic, Dr. Ekomobong acknowledged that while abortion remains a sensitive and often controversial subject, the medical reality cannot be ignored.
He stated that there are clear, evidence-based medical instances where performing the procedure stands as a necessary, life-saving intervention.
He concluded by calling for greater public enlightenment and compassion, urging families and communities across Akwa Ibom State to support evidence-based medical advice over social prejudice when critical health decisions arise.
