The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has assured travelers and stakeholders that robust preventive measures have been implemented across all international airports following the recent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in parts of Central Africa.
This proactive move comes just days after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17, 2026.
Centered in the DRC’s Ituri Province with confirmed spread to Uganda, the spike in reported cases and fatalities has sparked heightened regional health concerns.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Henry Agbebire, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN confirmed that it is working in close collaboration with Port Health Services, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and other relevant agencies.
Together, they are intensifying the surveillance and monitoring of passengers, with a strict focus on travelers arriving from high-risk regions.
The aviation authority has also strengthened coordination with key stakeholders, enhanced staff sensitization, and reinforced its emergency response procedures to ensure swift and decisive action if required.
As part of the active containment strategy, arrivals are currently undergoing rigorous screenings for symptoms associated with the virus.
FAAN noted that any suspected case will be promptly isolated and subjected to secondary medical evaluations in strict compliance with established national and international health protocols. “While there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, FAAN remains vigilant and fully committed to safeguarding public health and maintaining safe airport operations,” the authority stated.
In light of the reinforced protocols, FAAN has urged the traveling public to remain calm and cooperate fully with airport personnel.
Passengers are requested to comply with all ongoing health screening procedures and to immediately report any symptoms to on-duty health officials.
