In a major move to modernize its military capabilities, Nigeria is set to deploy artificial intelligence-powered surveillance systems and advanced anti-drone technology.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, disclosed this during a high-level visit to Monaco, France, where he led a Nigerian delegation to finalize discussions on the multi-domain Hybrid Intelligence Shield (HIS) project.

The initiative is specifically designed to fortify border security, protect urban centers, and drastically improve the country’s response to emerging security threats.

The HIS project is expected to introduce sophisticated AI-driven surveillance systems capable of identifying potential threats rapidly through smart algorithms.

Simultaneously, cutting-edge anti-drone technology will be deployed to intercept and neutralize unmanned aerial threats.

To ensure seamless integration, the Federal Government also plans to establish national and regional command-and-control centers, which will significantly improve real-time coordination and tactical responses to security incidents across the country.

Minister Musa emphasized that the initiative will place a strong focus on technology transfer and local capacity development, highlighted by the planned establishment of a military Centre of Excellence in Nigeria.

To achieve this, the government intends to leverage strategic partnerships with international defense firms, including Marss UK Ltd.

By building these indigenous capabilities, Nigeria aims to create a self-sustaining framework to aggressively address long-standing issues such as insurgency, illegal mining, and piracy.

This technological leap comes as Nigeria continues to battle complex, multi-faceted security challenges, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.

Security experts have long advocated for the adoption of integrated intelligence platforms, drones, and AI surveillance to enhance military operations.

This new defense architecture represents a direct answer to those calls, pivoting the nation toward a modern, tech-driven national security mechanism.
