In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, the former Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The high-profile move comes just 24 hours after Omo-Agege announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In an official statement, the veteran lawmaker declared his intention to contest for the Delta Central senatorial seat under the NDC banner, effectively setting the stage for a high-stakes legislative battle in Delta State.
Omo-Agege, who was the APC’s governorship candidate in Delta State during the 2023 elections, revealed that his defection followed weeks of intensive national and grassroots consultations with political associates, traditional institutions, and key stakeholders.
He disclosed that the top hierarchy of the NDC was instrumental in courting him, expressing gratitude to prominent party leaders including Senator Seriake Dickson (Founder), Senator Moses Cleopas (National Chairman), former Governor of Anambra, Peter Obi (Presidential aspirant), and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kwankwasiyya Movement Leader).
According to Omo-Agege, the NDC represents a vital governance model rooted in transparency, grassroots inclusion, and true federalism.
Explaining his motivation for returning to the legislative race, the Obarisi of Urhoboland emphasized that his ambition is driven by a popular demand from his constituents rather than personal interest. “This is not about me,” Omo-Agege stated. “This is about the mandate you entrusted to me in 2019 and the renewed call from our people for my return to the Senate to provide effective representation. That call is loud, consistent, alive and urgent. I cannot ignore it.”
He vowed to offer proactive, results-oriented representation in Abuja, pledging to fight for federal project allocations, strict accountability for state resources, and legislative policies that foster job creation.
The frontline politician used his declaration to launch a scathing critique against the current administration in Delta State, pointing out a stark contradiction between the state’s massive federal allocations and its decaying infrastructure.
He lamented that despite Delta being one of Nigeria’s largest oil and gas producers—yielding hundreds of billions of Naira annually—the state remains plagued by impassable roads, understaffed health centers, and high youth unemployment. “Right now, too much of Delta’s wealth sits in CBN accounts while our people suffer. This is not governance. It is a failure of leadership and a betrayal of public trust,” he asserted.
Reflecting on his political track record, Omo-Agege reminded stakeholders of his proven capacity to build formidable opposition structures, drawing parallels to how he previously engineered the growth of the APC in Delta State.
He stated that his immediate priority is to aggressively register new members and fortify the NDC from the ward level upward to challenge the status quo.
As the political landscape shifts, the lawmaker issued a passionate charge to youth, women, and traditional rulers to safeguard their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), promising that the NDC will field credible candidates across all levels to reclaim both Delta State and Nigeria in 2027.
