Bandits invaded the Baga community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State on Monday, killing five villagers and abducting 150 others. The attackers also set several houses ablaze, leaving a trail of destruction across the community.
A reliable community source told our correspondent that the gunmen carried sophisticated weapons and used bombs to wreak havoc. As terrified villagers fled into the bush for safety, the attackers gunned some down and rounded up others for abduction.
“The gunmen arrived in large numbers, likely entering from neighboring Kaduna State,” the source said. “Local vigilantes attempted to repel the invaders, but the gunmen shot several members, who are now receiving treatment for various injuries in the hospital.”
The source added that thick smoke still rises from Baga and surrounding villages, confirming that the attackers set multiple homes on fire.
In a swift response, security personnel have deployed to the area to rescue the victims and restore order.
The Chairman of Shiroro Local Government, Mr. Ishyaku Bawa, confirmed the deadly raid during a telephone interview with journalists.
“Yes, bandits invaded the community. They killed some villagers and injured others,” Bawa stated. “We are currently at the hospital attending to the wounded, so I cannot provide further details at this moment.”
