Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate To Algeria, Mohammed Lele Dies At 50

The Federal Government has announced the passing of Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who died in Ankara, Türkiye, on April 19, 2026.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the 50-year-old diplomat succumbed to a protracted illness. His remains were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by Permanent Secretary, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, before being laid to rest in Kano following Islamic rites.

A distinguished career diplomat, Ambassador Lele was recently appointed to the Algerian mission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following his successful confirmation by the Nigerian Senate. Before this prestigious appointment, he served as the Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His career was marked by a steady rise through the ranks, reflecting his reputation as a dedicated and strategically minded officer.

Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele was an alumnus of Bayero University, Kano, where he studied Economics. His extensive diplomatic journey took him across the globe, with notable service at Nigerian missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh. The Ministry highlighted his intellectual depth and unwavering commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, noting that his expertise in international relations made him a vital asset to the nation’s diplomatic corps.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Lele’s passing as a “monumental loss” to the Foreign Service community and the nation at large. Permanent Secretary Ahmed remembered him as a “hardworking, humble, and fine officer” who served with distinct honour. In its closing tribute, the government extended deep condolences to his family and the people of Bauchi State, mourning the loss of a diplomat who was poised to represent Nigeria’s interests on the continental stage.
