President Bola Tinubu held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. The visit was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who shared images of the two leaders in a relaxed discussion.

While no official statement has been released regarding the specific agenda, the engagement is viewed as part of a recurring pattern of high-level consultations on West African political affairs and Nigeria’s broader continental interests.
The meeting marks Jonathan’s first visit to the State House this year, with a “Two-Year Milestone” document notably visible in the President’s office during their talks. The former president has remained a key diplomatic figure in the region, frequently representing Nigeria in mediation and election monitoring roles across the continent. His presence at the Villa underscores the ongoing collaboration between the current administration and past leadership on matters of regional stability and democratic governance.
This engagement follows a dramatic period in late 2025 when Jonathan was evacuated from Guinea-Bissau following a military coup while leading the West African Elders Forum election observation mission. During his last visit to the State House in November 2025, he briefed President Tinubu on the crisis and the safety of democratic stakeholders in the region. Today’s meeting reaffirms Jonathan’s continued role as a statesman and advisor on the complex security and political landscape currently facing the West African sub-region.
