The Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Prince Anthony Nyong, has lifted the suspension earlier placed on the Nsit Atai Students Association of Nigeria (NASAN) Worldwide, thereby restoring the Association’s full recognition by the Council.
The announcement was made during a meeting held at the Council Secretariat, Odot. It would be recalled that the Council had previously suspended the activities of NASAN worldwide following tensions arising from an inconclusive election. The decision was taken to forestall a breakdown of law and order and to allow tempers to cool.
Addressing the students, the Chairman emphasised that his administration holds students in high esteem, but would not tolerate any attempt by individuals to use student activism as a cover to foment unrest or endanger lives.
He further stated that NASAN should serve as a unifying platform through which students can collaborate and channel their academic and welfare concerns to the council for necessary support, rather than becoming an avenue for propaganda.
Announcing the lifting of the suspension, the Chairman noted that the Association currently lacks substantive leadership structure. To address this, he approved the constitution of an interim leadership to oversee the affairs of the Association. Comrade Johnny Monday Johnny was appointed Chairman of the interim Government, while Comrade Happiness Friday, was appointed Secretary.
Other members of the interim leadership include, Comrade Tony Okokon, Comrade Emem Etukudo, Comrade Utom-Obong Daniel, Comrade Enefiok Sunday, Comrade Nicholas Uwem Nyong.
While inaugurating the interim leadership, the Chairman charged them to work toward unifying the student body and to develop a clear roadmap for conducting a credible and peaceful election within the next few months.
He also cautioned against the involvement of non-students in the affairs of the Association and announced a donation of ₦1 million to support the interim administration.
In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the interim Government, Comrade Johnny Monday Johnny, expressed gratitude to the Chairman for the confidence reposed in him, describing the opportunity as a privilege. He pledged to promote unity, peace, and the overall interest of students.
Also speaking, the Chapter President of NASAN, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Comrade Mfon Ime, and the representative of Nsit Atai Students at the University of Uyo, Comrade Promise Ekot, thanked the Chairman for lifting the suspension and restoring the Association’s recognition.
They assured him of their support for the interim leadership in ensuring stability and the successful conduct of fresh elections.
