The Akwa Ibom State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has urged residents to remain vigilant following confirmed reports of a covid-19 outbreak in a neighbouring Cross River State.
In a press release signed by the Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umanah, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, mandated the immediate activation of heightened surveillance measures across the State, after he received a briefing from the Commissioner of Health.
These measures include monitoring at all entry points, health facilities and communities to ensure early detection of any suspected case.
The government said disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams have already been placed on alert. The move is aimed at ensuring swift identification and management of potential infections, thereby limiting the spread of the virus within the State.
They urged everyone to observe key preventive measures such as regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers. The release also recommended wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces and avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of illness.
Additionally, citizens are urged to refrain from handshakes and other physical greetings, while anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing is encouraged to seek prompt medical attention.
Healthcare workers have also been reminded to maintain strict infection prevention and control protocols. The Governor further directed the Ministry of Health to strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other relevant partners to ensure effective monitoring and a coordinated response.
The Government reassured residents of its commitment to safeguarding public health, and also advised against the spread of unverified information that could trigger unnecessary panic.
An enquiry desk has been established at the Ministry of Health, with designated officials available to respond to public concerns and provide verified information.
