The Enugu State Government, in partnership with the State Police Command, has apprehended Ogechi John for the alleged murder of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Ogechi Amanda John.

The suspect, a native of Ikwo Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, was taken into custody on Monday morning following the tragic incident at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene.

While police authorities have yet to issue a formal statement, the arrest marks a swift response to a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community.

The tragedy reportedly unfolded on Sunday afternoon, with neighbors alleging that the young girl died after being subjected to a severe beating at approximately 3:00 PM.

Local residents have come forward with disturbing claims that the late Amanda was a frequent victim of domestic abuse and systemic maltreatment at the hands of her stepmother prior to her death.

These allegations suggest a prolonged environment of violence that culminated in the child’s untimely passing.

In a swift reaction to the development, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, visited the area to condemn the act.

She emphasized that the Governor Peter Mbah administration maintains a “zero-tolerance” policy regarding child abuse and homicide.

The Commissioner confirmed that the ministry swung into immediate action upon hearing of the tragedy to ensure the suspect did not evade law enforcement.

Looking forward, the state government has vowed to monitor the legal proceedings closely to prevent any delays in the judicial process.

Commissioner Enih stated that the government is pressing for a thorough and expedited investigation, asserting that “justice must be done really fast.”

She reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working with security agencies to create a protective shield for children and to ensure that any perpetrator of such heinous abuse faces the full weight of the law.
