The Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Fire Service, Emmanuel Udofia, has issued a stern warning to residents regarding the improper use and handling of cooking gas cylinders.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the XL News Hour, Udofia emphasized that negligence in managing inflammable materials has become a leading cause of preventable domestic disasters.
The fire official stressed the importance of proactive maintenance, advising homeowners to conduct regular inspections of their equipment.
He specifically highlighted the dangers posed by faulty regulators and leaking cylinders, which can turn a kitchen into a high-risk zone in a matter of seconds. To mitigate these risks, he urged the public to adopt the habit of routine safety checks.
In a significant safety recommendation, Udofia advocated for a change in how gas is stored within the home. He insisted that gas cylinders should be kept outside the house rather than in the kitchen.
According to the PRO, external storage ensures that in the event of a minor leak, the gas disperses into the open air rather than accumulating to explosive levels within an enclosed space.
Beyond domestic safety, Udofia turned his attention to the proliferation of roadside gas dealers and unapproved refill stations.
He expressed deep concern over the operation of these facilities, particularly those located within densely populated residential areas. He noted that such unregulated businesses pose a massive “silent threat” to the lives and properties of nearby residents.
The Fire Service spokesperson concluded by reaffirming the agency’s commitment to strict enforcement of safety protocols.
He warned that the state is prepared to crack down on operators running gas stations without proper government approval, vowing that the Fire Service will continue to monitor and penalize those who flout established safety regulations.
