Argentina pulled off a stunning rescue act to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a thrilling knockout encounter, securing their place in the World Cup quarterfinals.

The reigning world champions found themselves in deep trouble after a resilient Egyptian side threatened a massive upset.

However, a late, dramatic comeback saved La Albiceleste from elimination, setting up a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash against Switzerland.

Egypt put the football world on notice by pushing the favorites to the absolute limit. Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico both found the back of the net to put the North African side in a commanding position.

Zico even had a second potential goal ruled out during the fiercely contested match. Egypt’s defensive resilience was further highlighted when goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made a heroic first-half penalty save to deny Argentine maestro Lionel Messi, leaving the world champions on the brink of disaster.

But Argentina’s championship pedigree shone through when it mattered most. Digging themselves out of a perilous hole, Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi struck in tandem, scoring two goals in the space of just four frantic minutes to level the playing field.

With the match seemingly heading to extra time, Argentina launched a lethal late counter-attack in stoppage time.

The ball was whipped into the box for Enzo Fernández, who powered home a dramatic header to seal the 3-2 victory and break Egyptian hearts.

Meanwhile, Switzerland booked their own ticket to the quarterfinals by outlasting Colombia in a tense, grueling encounter.

After a goalless draw through 120 minutes of regular and extra time, the match was ultimately decided by a dramatic penalty shootout in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Both teams traded blows in a high-stakes psychological battle from the spot before the Swiss finally edged ahead.

The shootout heroics belonged to Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who made a crucial save to deny Colombia’s Cucho Hernández, following earlier misses from Colombia’s Davinson Sánchez and Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji.

Substitute Rubén Vargas then stepped up to coolly convert the winning penalty, sealing a 4-3 shootout victory for the Swiss. With the stage now set, Switzerland will move on to face a battle-tested Argentina in a blockbuster quarterfinal matchup.
