A high-level delegation comprising officials from the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) visited FIFA Headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, on Tuesday, yielding significant dividends for Nigerian football.
The visit successfully secured a commitment from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who pledged the global football governing body’s unwavering willingness to collaborate with Nigeria to bolster its developmental initiatives for the sport.
Reacting to the strategic meeting led by NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, the FIFA President took to his official X handle to express his satisfaction with the discussions.
Infantino noted that he was pleased to sit down with the Nigerian delegation at the Home of FIFA to align their shared vision for the sport.
He emphasized that the dialogue centered on crucial institutional, governance, and developmental topics, as well as the ongoing collaborative efforts between FIFA and Nigeria.
During the comprehensive talks, both parties stressed the critical need for long-term structural improvements to harness Nigeria’s immense athletic potential.
Infantino highlighted the importance of creating stronger frameworks and pathways to provide even more opportunities for the youth.
He further reiterated that the two bodies extensively explored specific areas where FIFA could offer targeted support to accelerate the growth of the beautiful game in the deeply football-passionate nation.
The FIFA boss also seized the opportunity to offer words of encouragement to Nigeria’s junior women’s national teams as they gear up for the global stage.
He extended his best wishes to the Falconets and Flamingos ahead of their respective campaigns in the upcoming FIFA U-20 and U-17 Women’s World Cups.
Additionally, Infantino thanked the Nigerian delegation for their time, innovative ideas, and clear positive intent to work cohesively in driving Nigerian football forward.
Crucially, Infantino’s warm remarks and the successful Zurich meeting have firmly poured cold water on recent malicious rumors threatening to destabilize the nation’s football administration.
The positive engagement effectively dispels a widely circulated fake letter—falsely purported to be from FIFA to the NSC and NFF—which alleged that the world body was interrogating the federation over whether the purported mass resignation of former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and his Executive Committee was voluntary or government-instigated.
