Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has issued a strict directive mandating all commercial tricycle and bus operators in the state to register their vehicles and obtain official identification numbers and QR codes.
The governor warned that any unregistered commercial vehicle found operating on state roads after the new deadline of September 30, 2026, will be barred from service.
Governor Eno announced this directive during his routine inspection tour of major ongoing infrastructure projects across the state.
His itinerary included inspections at the Victor Attah International Airport Hospital, the aviation staff quarters, the Dakkada Luxury Estate, and the newly established Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus terminal in Uyo.
Addressing the rationale behind the policy, the governor explained that the mandatory registration is primarily designed to bolster public security.
The measure will empower security agencies and state authorities to easily identify, monitor, and track commercial transport operators conveying passengers throughout Akwa Ibom.
Highlighting the government’s responsiveness to public feedback, Governor Eno noted that the initial registration deadline was extended to September 30 following passionate appeals from transport operators.
He emphasized that this extension provides ample time for all affected stakeholders to complete the compliance process without undue hardship.
Furthermore, the governor stressed that the enforcement timeline is crucial as the state approaches the festive season, a period traditionally characterized by a massive influx of travelers, increased movement of people, and heightened security vigilance.
During the same inspection tour, Governor Eno inspected state-of-the-art facilities being built to support the deployment of Akwa Ibom’s 50 new CNG buses.
He noted that the initiative encompasses a comprehensive infrastructure framework—including a dedicated terminal, a modern workshop, and a training center—designed to ensure sustainable and efficient mass transit operations.
According to the government’s timeline, the new transport terminal is scheduled to become fully operational by November, ahead of the state’s flagship “Christmas Unplugged” festivities commencing on December 1, 2026.
