An historic wave is sweeping through the 2026 FIFA World Cup as seven African nations have officially locked in their spots for the newly expanded Round of 32.

Following the tense conclusion of matches across Groups A through I, South Africa, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Cabo Verde, Senegal, and Ghana have all advanced.

Remarkably, Ghana’s Black Stars secured their knockout berth early, booking their ticket even with their final group-stage fixture still left to play after the conclusion of action on Friday.

Senegal punched their ticket in spectacular fashion, unleashing a ruthless second-half blitz to thrash Iraq 5-0 at the Toronto Stadium. The Lions of Teranga enjoyed a dream start, with Diarra poking home from a corner to score the fastest goal in the country’s World Cup history.

Senegal’s path was made easier when Iraq’s Rebin Sulaka was sent off following a VAR upgrade for bringing down Sadio Mané.

While the first half remained tight, the African giants exploded after the interval: Ismaïla Sarr doubled the lead after brilliant setup play from Lamine Camara, Pape Gueye netting a stunning quick-fire brace—including a brilliant long-range strike—and Iliman Ndiaye adding a fifth from distance to cap off the rout.

Meanwhile, Egypt made history by advancing past the World Cup group stage for the very first time after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Iran in Seattle.

The Pharaohs had to survive a massive scare when a potential match-winning goal by Iran was chalked off following a tense offside review.

The result meant Egypt secured second place in Group G, while group winners Belgium—who had previously drawn with Egypt—stormed to the top of the standings by crushing New Zealand 5-1 in Vancouver.

Iran must now wait out an agonizing 24 hours to see if they can slip through as one of the best third-placed teams.

Arguably the most fairytale story of the tournament belongs to Cabo Verde, who completed an improbable, undefeated run through the group stage.

The Blue Sharks played out a gritty 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia on Friday night to become the smallest country by population ever to reach a FIFA World Cup knockout round.

Making their absolute debut on football’s grandest stage, the tiny island nation proved they belong with the elite, having already shocked the world by holding 2010 champions Spain to a scoreless draw and fighting back to rescue a 2-2 tie against powerhouse Uruguay.

Cabo Verde’s resilient haul of three points earned them a second-place finish in the group just behind Spain, who defeated Uruguay on Friday to claim the top spot.

The ultimate David vs. Goliath reward now awaits the debutants on the big stage.

In what is sure to be an unforgettable cinematic clash, Cabo Verde will travel to Miami on July 3 to square off against Lionel Messi and the reigning World Champions, Argentina, for a place in the Round of 16.
