Akwa Ibom Gov’t Crackdown: Zero Tolerance for ‘One-Way’ Driving

The Akwa Ibom State Government has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for driving against the traffic, locally known as “one-way” driving.

Describing the act as both dangerous and entirely unacceptable, authorities have warned that reckless road behaviour will no longer be overlooked in any part of the state.

The Commissioner for Transport, Anthony Luke, made this declaration during a comprehensive sensitisation and enforcement exercise conducted across major roads within the Uyo metropolis.

The targeted operations spanned several high-traffic corridors, including Edet Akpan Avenue, Nung Oku Junction, Atiku Abubakar Way, Wellington Bassey Way, Oron Road, and Aka Road.

Speaking on the risks, Dr. Luke lamented that one-way driving has resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives. He issued a stern warning that offenders will face strict sanctions, emphasizing that no individual will be spared regardless of their social status or influence, as the government remains fiercely committed to ensuring safety and orderliness on all public roads.

During the enforcement drive, several vehicles caught violating traffic regulations were promptly impounded and hauled before the Ministry of Transport’s mobile court for immediate prosecution.

The Commissioner explained that the enforcement aligns with Governor Umo Eno’s A.R.I.S.E. Agenda—particularly regarding public safety—and was strategically timed around the Children’s Day and Eid-el-Kabir celebrations to guarantee safer travels for residents.

“We urge motorists, tricycle operators, and commercial drivers to obey traffic regulations, avoid reckless driving, and cultivate patience on the roads.” — Dr. Anthony Luke, Commissioner for Transport

In response to the government’s decisive action, local residents and onlookers commended the Ministry of Transport for its proactive measures.

Many noted that the ongoing enforcement is a much-needed intervention to restore sanity, order, and security within the state capital.
