The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the arrest of a 23-year-old man, Mfon Essien, for the illegal possession of a firearm.
The suspect, a native of Ikot Inyang Itak Village in Ikono Local Government Area, was apprehended by operatives on Sunday along Ayah Road, off Uyo Road, in Ikot Ekpene.
According to a press statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, the arrest followed actionable intelligence gathered by security personnel.
During a search, officers recovered a locally made shotgun loaded with a live cartridge, which was concealed beneath the suspect’s clothing.
Police authorities stated that the breakthrough highlights the command’s ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illicit arms and prevent violent crimes throughout the state.
Investigators are currently working to trace the origin of the weapon, determine Essien’s exact intentions, and uncover any potential accomplices or criminal networks he may be linked to.
State Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the operatives and reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal weapons.
He warned individuals involved in the circulation of unauthorized firearms that the police will aggressively deploy intelligence-led operations, targeted patrols, and other lawful countermeasures.
Concluding the statement, the Commissioner urged residents of Akwa Ibom to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals to law enforcement.
He assured the public that all information provided would be handled with strict confidentiality as the police remain committed to maintaining peace and protecting lives.
