The Akwa Ibom State Government has declared its readiness to partner with potential investors and corporate organizations to convert its current environmental challenges into a profitable and sustainable waste-to-wealth economy.
This strategic shift aims to leverage modern waste management technologies to generate revenue, create employment opportunities, and ensure a cleaner environment for the state.
The State Governor, Umo Eno, made this announcement in Uyo, the state capital, during a media interaction organized to mark his anniversary in office.
Speaking with journalists, the Governor emphasized that the administration is actively looking for collaborators who possess the technical expertise and financial capacity to revolutionize the state’s waste management sector.
Governor Eno expressed deep concern over the current environmental conditions across the state. He noted that despite the substantial financial allocations consistently funneled into the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), the visible results on the ground have yet to match the government’s heavy investments.
Driven by the need for greater efficiency and value for taxpayers’ money, the Governor revealed that he has already directed the leadership of the waste management agency to aggressively scout for viable investors.
The goal is to transition from traditional, capital-intensive disposal methods to a modern framework where waste is treated as a valuable resource.
The proposed public-private partnerships are expected to introduce innovative recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy initiatives to Akwa Ibom.
By opening the sector to commercial investors, the state government hopes to relieve the burden on public funds while establishing a self-sustaining eco-friendly economy.
