In a bold move to reposition the state’s educational landscape, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has declared a state of emergency in the education sector.

The announcement was made on Monday during the commemoration of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, held under the theme “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status, and Shaping Our Futures.”

As part of this sweeping transformation, Governor Eno announced the appointment of Professor Philip Afaha as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the newly established Akwa Ibom State University of Education.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Governor highlighted that it was under his administration that the historic bill transitioning the institution into a full-fledged specialized university was successfully signed into law.

To ensure a thorough reform, the Governor stated that a dedicated team will be constituted immediately to holistically review and overhaul the state’s entire education system, tackling infrastructural and systemic challenges from the ground up.

In a major boost to educator welfare, Governor Eno approved a wardrobe allowance of ₦50,000 per teacher for twenty thousand state-employed teachers.

Additionally, he announced a financial support package of ₦500,000 for each of the 1,776 registered private schools across the state.

The sweeping policy announcements drew widespread attention at the event, underscoring the administration’s commitment to both public and private educational stakeholders.

Teachers at the venue welcomed the financial interventions as a timely morale booster amid ongoing economic realities.

Meanwhile, some teachers who spoke to XL News on the sidelines of the event expressed profound joy for being able to celebrate the monumental day.

However, they also voiced lingering concerns regarding day-to-day challenges faced by educators in the state, hoping the newly declared state of emergency will swiftly address those hurdles.
