Tragedy struck Eda Oniyo Ekiti in the Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Tuesday night as gunmen invaded a Christ Apostolic Church, killing the presiding pastor and abducting an unspecified number of worshippers.

The attack occurred around 8:30 pm during an evening program, as the armed assailants stormed the church premises located on the outskirts of the community.

Witnesses reported that the invaders arrived in large numbers, shooting the cleric before forcefully whisking several congregants into the nearby forest, leaving the local community in a state of shock and panic.

Local sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the exact number of victims remains unknown as community leaders work to identify missing persons. “The invaders were many,” one source noted, describing the harrowing scene that has left residents fearful of the region’s escalating insecurity.

In the wake of the assault, the community has entered a “panic mode,” with many calling for immediate intervention to secure the release of those taken and to prevent further bloodshed in the rural enclave.

The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday, announcing that Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, has ordered a massive manhunt for the perpetrators.

Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, stated that a joint task force—comprising the Nigerian Army, the Amotekun Corps, the Agro Marshal, vigilantes, and local hunters—has commenced aggressive “bush combing” operations.

This coordinated effort aims to track the kidnappers through the dense forest terrain and ensure the safe rescue of the abducted worshippers.

In response to the tragedy, the police have urged residents to remain calm while maintaining a high level of security consciousness. Commissioner Falade emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious movements and advised religious leaders to notify security agencies before organizing late-night gatherings to allow for adequate protection.

As investigations continue, the state command remains committed to prosecuting those responsible and has vowed to restore order to the Ilejemeje Local Government Area.
