Tragedy struck Gero Village in the Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Tuesday afternoon when unidentified gunmen stormed a local mining site, leaving five youths dead.
The armed invaders reportedly descended on the site at approximately 3:00 PM, opening fire on the victims who were actively engaged in mining activities.
All five youths were killed on the spot in what community leaders are describing as a cold-blooded assault.
The deadly incident occurred just hours after a separate attack was reported near the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, located roughly five kilometres from Gero Village.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) confirmed the killings in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong.
The association further revealed that the earlier ambush near NIPSS had claimed the lives of three security personnel, highlighting a deeply concerning surge in violence across the axis.
Expressing grave concern over the safety of local residents and strategic national assets, the BYM characterized the consecutive attacks as part of an escalating security threat in the region.
The group made an urgent appeal to government authorities and security agencies to step up surveillance, intervene decisively to prevent further bloodshed, and restore public confidence in the affected communities.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the dual attacks.
Efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, for comments and updates on potential suspects or arrests were unsuccessful.
