The Presidency has criticized former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, for his latest defection from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, weeks after joining the ADC from the Labour Party, LP.
In a statement released, the Presidency described Obi as a “political nomad” and dismissed his stated reasons for leaving the ADC as illogical and self-serving.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the remarks on his verified X account, accusing Obi of constantly blaming the government without self-reflection, calling him “a politician made of jelly, an opportunistic fellow”.
He also wrote, “We told you so. The political nomad is on the move again. Ignore all those puerile reasons he gave in these illogical musings, a self-serving letter to his mob”.
Onanuga argued that Obi “can’t fight Atiku or Amaechi for the ticket of ADC” and instead “pursues the easy road, that will only lead him to doom, like in 2023″.
The Presidency’s comments frame Obi’s defection as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 general elections, suggesting the former LP presidential candidate is avoiding internal party competition. Onanuga added, “He always blames the government without doing a soul-searching of himself”.
Concluding his post, Onanuga wrote, “Welcome, Peter, to the 2027 race.” The remarks come amid a wave of defections and realignments as parties prepare to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s May 10 deadline for submission of membership registers.
Obi had earlier cited state interference and internal crises as reasons for leaving the ADC, insisting his decision was to allow peace within the party.
