Governor Eno Charges NYSC Members on National Service Amidst Facility Concerns

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has called on the latest batch of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to view their deployment as a “rare privilege” to serve Nigeria with integrity.

Speaking on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream 2 orientation course, the Governor emphasized the importance of dedication and selflessness.

Represented by Anthony Isonguyo, the Director of Administration and Supply for the Ministry of Youth Development, the Governor further urged the corps members to sensitize local communities on their civic responsibilities to foster a more peaceful and egalitarian society.

However, the ceremony was overshadowed by lingering questions regarding the state of the NYSC Orientation Camp in Nsit-Atai.

Despite the Governor’s previous approval for reconstruction works during the August 2025 swearing-in of an earlier batch, his representative offered no updates on the progress of these renovations.

This silence follows a recent appeal from the NYSC State Coordinator, who warned that the camp’s facilities have deteriorated significantly, with leaking roofs and crumbling infrastructure requiring the urgent intervention promised nearly a year ago.

Adding to the tension is the growing frustration among corps members regarding their financial welfare. While Governor Eno had famously announced an increase in the state’s monthly allowance from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 effective August 1, 2025, recent reports from those on the ground suggest the policy is no longer being implemented.

The disparity between the Governor’s previous public commitments and the current reality has become a focal point of discussion among the personnel deployed to the state.

As the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream 2 corps members depart the camp for their various places of primary assignment, the state government faces mounting pressure to address these infrastructure and welfare gaps.

While the administration continues to champion the spirit of national service, stakeholders argue that the “dedication and honesty” requested of the youth should be met with the timely fulfillment of government promises to ensure a conducive environment for their service year.
