Nigeria’s weightlifting prodigy, Ruth Asuquo Nyong, has firmly established her dominance on the continental stage by clinching the championship title in the women’s 48kg category.
Competing at the ongoing African Senior Weightlifting Championships in Ismailia, the Akwa Ibom-born athlete delivered a masterclass in strength and precision, securing a clean sweep of the podium for Team Nigeria.
The rising star left little room for doubt regarding her elite status, claiming three gold medals across the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift categories.
Nyong executed a flawless 74kg snatch before returning to the platform to power through a 93kg clean and jerk. Her impressive total lift of 167kg placed her in a league of her own, finishing significantly ahead of her nearest rivals.
The battle for the remaining podium spots saw Tunisia’s Khadhraoui Maissa secure the silver medal. Maissa finished with a total lift of 139kg, following a 61kg snatch and a 78kg clean and jerk.
Meanwhile, Madagascar’s Tendru Mahay rounded out the top three, earning three bronze medals for her combined effort of 136kg.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Nyong, who has been on a consistent upward trajectory in the international circuit.
Having previously secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, this triple-gold performance in Egypt signals her evolution from a promising contender to a formidable champion within the African weightlifting community.
As the dust settles in Ismailia, Nyong’s performance has significantly boosted Nigeria’s standing in the medal table and solidified her reputation as one of the nation’s brightest prospects.
With her eyes now set on the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, sports analysts and fans alike view her as a primary gold-medal hopeful for Nigeria on the global stage.
