The Akwa Ibom State Fire Service has made a passionate appeal to the state government, private organizations, and relevant agencies to support its operations.
The call aims to enhance the agency’s capacity for effective and timely responses to fire emergencies across the state, ensuring the safety of lives and properties.
The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Emmanuel Udofia, made the plea following a devastating fire outbreak at Johnson Street, near the busy Akpan Andem Market in Uyo.
The inferno razed about fifteen shops, destroying goods and properties worth millions of Naira, leaving many traders in distress.
Speaking on the XL Super Breakfast Show, Udofia revealed that efforts by firemen to contain the blaze were severely hindered by operational challenges.
He disclosed that a key fire truck could not function effectively during the emergency due to a lack of diesel, a situation that slowed down their rescue mission.

“The Fire Service currently operates without adequate funding after being moved to a department that does not sufficiently cater for its financial needs.” — Emmanuel Udofia, PRO
In light of these constraints, the spokesman urged the Akwa Ibom State Government, the Ministry of Works, corporate bodies, and well-meaning individuals to intervene.
He emphasized that external assistance is critical to ensuring uninterrupted operations and improving the overall emergency response framework of the state.
Meanwhile, Udofia attributed the cause of the Johnson Street disaster to a faulty electrical socket. He strongly advised residents to regularly inspect and replace worn-out electrical appliances and wiring, while urging the general public to remain safety conscious at all times to prevent avoidable fire disasters.
