Amaechi Cries Foul Over ADC Primary; Claims Massive Voter Disenfranchisement

Former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected the outcome of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries, alleging widespread voter disenfranchisement and electoral malpractice during the exercise.

The primaries, conducted nationwide on Monday ahead of the 2027 presidential election, featured former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, Amaechi, and former Managing Director of the defunct FSB International Bank, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, as leading contenders.

In a statement shared on his X handle on Tuesday, Amaechi described the results being announced by the party as “concocted,” insisting that he would not accept an outcome that lacked fairness, transparency, and credibility.

He maintained that he had earlier made it clear that his acceptance of the results depended entirely on the conduct of a free and fair process.

The former minister accused the ADC leadership of betraying the principles the party claimed to represent in its bid to provide Nigerians with a credible political alternative.

According to him, the party could not claim to stand for justice and accountability while allegedly engaging in practices that undermined the democratic rights of its members during the primaries.

Amaechi further alleged that a significant percentage of party members across the country were denied the opportunity to vote.

He questioned how the party could claim legitimacy when, according to him, nearly 80 per cent of members were allegedly disenfranchised.

He added that the ADC was founded to amplify the voices of ordinary Nigerians and promote fairness, inclusion, and national unity irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or social background.

The former Rivers State governor also accused the party of adopting the same electoral practices it had previously criticised in the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission, including alleged vote buying and manipulation of results.

While the ADC leadership has yet to officially announce the final collated results from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, early figures from several states reportedly showed Atiku maintaining a commanding lead, with Amaechi trailing in second place and Hayatu-Deen in third position.
