Akpabio Alleges Politically Sponsored Insecurity Ahead of 2027 Elections

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that rising insecurity in Nigeria is being politically sponsored as the 2027 general elections approach.

Akpabio made the claim on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service headquarters in Abuja, stating that security challenges often intensify during election periods due to deliberate efforts to distract the government.

According to him, incidents of violence could decline shortly after the elections, suggesting that some actors may be fueling unrest for political advantage. He, however, did not provide specific evidence to support the claim.

The Senate President also praised Bola Tinubu for ongoing reforms, saying the administration remains focused despite political pressure. He added that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to gain support across states.

Akpabio noted that the APC currently controls a majority of state governments and maintains strong representation in the National Assembly, dismissing concerns raised by opposition parties about the emergence of a one-party system.

He further criticised opposition groups, accusing them of internal disorganisation and deflecting blame onto institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The comments come amid heightened political activity and growing debates over electoral integrity as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
