In a major strategic shift ahead of the next general elections, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.
This landmark decision includes a specific proviso: the successful candidate will serve for a single four-year term. The resolution was reached during the party’s ongoing maiden National Convention, signaling a new era of internal power-sharing arrangements within the budding political platform.
The motion for this zoning formula was moved by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly.
Addressing a vibrant hall of party faithful, Ogene argued that the move ensures equity and national cohesion. The motion was subsequently put to a vote and adopted by a majority of the delegates present, cementing it as a core pillar of the party’s 2027 roadmap.
Further clarifying the party’s long-term rotation strategy, the convention resolved that the presidential ticket will automatically revert to Northern Nigeria following the completion of the southern four-year tenure.
This “switch” is designed to manage regional interests and prevent the prolonged dominance of any single geopolitical zone, a recurring point of contention in Nigerian party politics.
The development has immediately altered the political landscape, effectively clearing the path for high-profile figures like the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, to vie for the party’s nomination.
With the zoning hurdles removed, Obi and other southern aspirants are now expected to proceed to be presidential candidates, setting the stage for a competitive primary season within the NDC.
